Rendang, a traditional Indonesian dish originating from the Minangkabau ethnic group in West Sumatra, is a slow-cooked beef dish that is rich in flavors and spices. It is often served during special occasions and celebrations, and is a symbol of Minangkabau culture and heritage.
The submission of rendang for UNESCO recognition is a significant step towards preserving and promoting Indonesia’s culinary heritage on a global scale. UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage aims to safeguard and raise awareness of cultural practices and traditions that are passed down from generation to generation. By recognizing rendang as an intangible cultural heritage, it will help to protect and promote the traditional knowledge and skills associated with the preparation and serving of this iconic dish.
The Minister of Education and Culture, Nadiem Makarim, expressed his support for the submission of rendang to UNESCO, stating that it is a reflection of Indonesia’s rich cultural diversity and heritage. He also emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting traditional dishes like rendang to ensure that future generations can continue to appreciate and celebrate Indonesia’s culinary traditions.
In addition to the submission of rendang for UNESCO recognition, Menbud is also working on various initiatives to promote and preserve Indonesia’s cultural heritage. This includes the documentation and digitization of traditional knowledge and skills, as well as the establishment of cultural centers and museums to showcase Indonesia’s diverse cultural heritage.
Overall, the submission of rendang for UNESCO recognition is a significant milestone in preserving and promoting Indonesia’s culinary heritage. By highlighting the cultural significance of rendang on a global scale, it will help to raise awareness and appreciation for Indonesia’s rich and diverse culinary traditions. It is hoped that rendang will soon be added to UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage, further cementing its status as an iconic Indonesian dish.
